White Buttermilk Cake

The cake that was the go-to recipe for all the birthday cakes that Ivadean made for us. Don't tell her I'm making her one for her birthday in March!

2 C sugar
½ tsp salt
1 C shortening
1 C buttermilk
3 C flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking powder
5 egg whites
½ tsp soda

1. Cream sugar and shortening. 
2. Sift flour, baking powder, soda, and salt. 
3. Alternate dry ingredients with buttermilk and vanilla. 
4. Add egg whites, beating 2 min. after each. 
5. Bake 35 to 45 min. in a 9x 13 in. pan at 350.

Icing:
½ C shortening
1 box powdered sugar (this is about 4 cups)
½ C butter
2 TB water
Mix together and spread on cake.
