Number the Stars

Riveting book talk by Angela Crider.

Lowry, L. (1989). Number the stars. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company.

Have you ever felt like the world was on your shoulders? How did you handle the situation? Now close your eyes and imagine this: It is September 1943, you are ten years old, and you live in Denmark. The Nazis have been running the show for three years now. You and your family do not have much, but you do have a best friend. The problem is she and her family are Jewish. All of the Jewish citizens are being "relocated," but we all know this means they are going to concentration camps. Things are only getting worse around town, and the Germans just interrogated you and your friend on the way home from school..close call. Knowing she and her family could be killed by the Germans, you and your family must help them escape to safety in Sweden. But getting caught could mean the end of your life, too. Now, open your eyes.

What would you do? I bet you feel pretty glad to be back in reality, but this is reality for Annemarie Johensen in Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. She is a ten-year-old girl caught up in a storm of emotions as she worries for her friend, Ellen, and her family. There is not much time, and she knows something has to be done to save her friends.

Have you ever felt like something was going on and all the adults around you just won't tell you anything? They say things like, "ignorance is bliss" or "sometimes it is important not to know too much." Do you believe this to be true? Imagine being in Annemarie's shoes as she and her family, along with Ellen whose parents have disappeared, travel to the countryside where there is a Resistance to Nazi power. Strange things start happening, like a funeral for an aunt Annemarie knows never existed. Would you be eager to find out what was going on? All Annemarie knows is that something big is about to happen and she knows she will be a part of it.

Buckle your seat belts, because this book will take you for a ride! Follow Annemarie on her quest to save Ellen and her family and find out what her family is really up to. Why are they having a fake funeral? Where have Ellen's parents gone? Find out when we read Number the Stars!
